PANTHÈRE DE CARTIER AT HARRODS

Posted on 2020-10-26

For the very first time, Cartier unveils an experiential installation dedicated to the iconic Panthère de Cartier in London’s renowned department store, Harrods.

Connected to the existing Cartier boutique and Cartier Avenue, the Panthère de Cartier experience will run from October 26th to November 27th, 2020.

A truly immersive experience, visitors will marvel through a captivating journey whilst exploring different rooms with unique elements narrating the Panthère de Cartier story.

Welcomed by Cartier bellboys upon arrival, visitors immediately dive into the Panthère universe surrounded by deep hues of emerald green — a nod to the animal’s piercing eyes, to discover the story of Jeanne Toussaint. A trailblazer, free spirit and style icon of the 20th century, Jeanne Toussaint was herself known as “La Panthère.” It is under her creative direction that the Panthère became a Cartier signature.

Continuing the journey through an Infinity Room featuring a mirrored tunnel with fully reflective surfaces, visitors are invited to discover the Panthère style from its inception in 1914, through to today’s latest creations.

In the following room, a show stopping 3D Panthère brings the feline to life through a myriad of sparkling lights, where visitors can take home bespoke Panthère de Cartier keepsakes including tote bags, posters and postcards. A new ‘touch & try’ space will offer the opportunity to try on pieces in the Panthère de Cartier studio, set up as the perfect backdrop for a memorable photograph.

CARTIER – MAGNITUDE – PUBLIC EXHIBITION

Posted on 2019-06-27

Discover the latest creations inspired by the collision of materials, a theme dear to Cartier’s legacy.
Magnitude is a new illustration of Cartier’s ability to constantly reinvent itself while maintaining the permanence of its style. The collection highlights the long standing history of Cartier to use unexpected materials and to create pieces that showcase the use of transparency and openwork.

In Magnitude, Cartier brings together with bold and creative panache materials that were never meant to meet. Sapphire shines alongside matrix opal; emerald gleams next to rock crystal, and pink diamond is juxtaposed with morganite and coral.

Ever since it was established, Cartier has been a prestigious name in High Jewellery. The Maison’s history began with a brilliant jeweller, Louis-Francois Cartier, who in 1847 took over his employer’s business and opened a boutique in his own name. There flocked the Parisian High Society. Louis Cartier, Louis-Francois’ great grandson was the force behind Cartier’s international expansion and the opening of the boutique in London and New York, respectively headed by his brothers Jacques and Pierre. In two generations, the Maison had become one of the most respected jewellers and watchmakers. Jacques is ultimately credited with making Cartier London what it is today. The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, even hailed Cartier as “the jeweller of kings, and the king of jewellers”.
To complement the newest Magnitude collection, over 600 magnificent High Jewellery pieces that tell the story of Cartier’s history and style will also be on display.

Open to the public on June 29th and 30th from 10:00am to 07:00pm (last entry at 6:00pm) with tours running every 30 minutes.

HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON – PARIS

Posted on 2016-03-14

Henri Cartier-Bresson: PARIS features 83 images captured between 1929 and 1985, many of which are being shown in the UK for the first time, providing an extraordinary insight into the streets of the city and the lives of its people. Opening concurrently with Alberto Giacometti: A Line through Time on the 23 April 2016, the two exhibitions complement one another and explore the rich artistic legacy of the era, bringing together two of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. Cartier-Bresson acknowledged Giacometti to be his favourite artist, and included in the exhibition will be his iconic portrait of Giacometti alone on a rain-drenched Paris street.
Known predominantly as a photographer of the street, Henri Cartier-Bresson’s images capture the dynamism of contemporary life and this exhibition explores one of his most enduring subjects – Paris. Exquisite black and white images record the people, places and activity of the city finding the unusual, the humorous, the poignant and the often marvellous in the ordinary and everyday.

HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON AND ROBERT FRANK

Posted on 2014-03-03

Indisputably two of the giants of 20th century photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank have rarely, if ever, been exhibited together. What is particularly surprising about this is that while each stands on their own with distinctive and seminal bodies of work, they have throughout their lives been loosely associated. Within a six year period of time they published what are arguably the two most influential books in the history of photography – Cartier-Bresson’s “The Decisive Moment” (1952) and Frank’s “The Americans” (1958). They traveled avidly and were never more productive than when they were on the road, and they both shied away from any personal publicity or fame the better to go out in the world unnoticed. In a medium that by the end of the century was largely taken over by photographers looking in, they looked out.

While Cartier-Bresson and Frank’s paths frequently crossed, a certain amount of friction, is known to have existed between the two. Cartier-Bresson is thought to have kept Frank out of becoming a member of Magnum, while Frank was openly dismissive of Cartier-Bresson’s work. Writing about his philosophy of photography in the preface to “The Decisive Moment” Henri Cartier-Bresson opined that a picture (story) is “a joint operation of the brain, the eye, and the heart”. One year later, Robert Frank, quoting Saint-Exupery countered – “it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

Rather than seeing these two artists as rivals, this show celebrates the pinnacle of an era where photography was still bursting with possibilities, Frank and Cartier-Bresson were at the height of their artistic power, traveling the world not to see it topographically but to understand and interpret the human condition.

CARTIER-BRESSON – A QUESTION OF COLOUR

Posted on 2012-11-05

It is well-known that Cartier-Bresson was disparaging towards colour photography, which in the 1950s was in its early years of development; his reasoning was based both on the technical and aesthetic limitations of the medium at the time.

Featuring 10 Cartier-Bresson photographs never before exhibited in the UK alongside over 75 works by 14 international acclaimed photographers, this extensive showcase will illustrate how photographers working in Europe and North America adopted and adapted the master’s ethos famously known as the ‘decisive moment’ to their work in colour. Though they often departed from the concept in significant ways, something of that challenge remained: how to seize something that happens and capture it in the very moment that it takes place.

Exhibition runs through till January 27th, 2013
