H. DAVID STEIN – TEXTURES AND COLORS

Posted on 2017-04-17

In this series of Stein’s photographs the stars of the show are the textures and colors of the objects being photographed. Some are bright, others subdued. It matters little what the object or structure is, only that we see the unique textures and colors that are being displayed. With the abstraction of these formal elements from the supremacy of the object as subject, we are pulled more deeply into looking at edges, shadows and the smaller shapes that when multiplied form the tactile surfaces. The images Stein has created reinforce the very nature of the photograph as the more concrete object.
When Stein retired as a professor of surgery, he took courses at the International Center for Photography with several well-known photographers in the New York area. As a surgeon trained to look for minute variations of color and texture in the human body together with the inspiration he received from some of the finest artists in this medium, Stein has developed of way of seeing and reacting to the world around him with a unique aesthetic.
Stein prints all the photographs himself to assure consistently high quality images using archival materials to insure the longevity of these photographs.

Exhibition runs through to April 30th, 2017
