ROBERT HOLYHEAD – NO MOVEMENT, NO COLOUR

Posted on 2020-01-06

Created between 2018 and 2019, the large works are relatable in size to both the viewer and spaces they are held in, without losing the intimacy of each composition.
Each work is produced in a single semi-translucent colour, showing visible traces of brushstrokes that operate around precisely defined shapes of immaculate white ground. Created in long single sessions, not unlike durational performances, the paintings evolve from watercolour drawings produced over several weeks or months. During this lead-up, spatial decisions are rigorously tested, and ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ visual components meticulously balanced. Erasure, shown in the lighter sections of the works where oil pigment has been carefully removed, contributes to the active nature of the paintings.

HERNAN BAS

Posted on 2019-12-30

This exhibition will include seven large-scale paintings and one decorative room screen that feature a series of strange and seemingly obscure or forgotten moments that have influenced American culture. This body of work illustrates Bas’ innate ability to
highlight cult phenomena from the past that offer insight into the political and social concerns of today. Rather than focusing on a singular subject matter, as Bas has done previously, this series spans time periods and themes, providing a unique perspective on American subculture and a contemporary version of History Painting.

TOBIAS REHBERGER – AND THE REST SHOULD BE SQUANDERED

Posted on 2019-12-30

German artist Tobias Rehberger (Esslingen, 1966) is a leading figure in the field of contemporary art today. Although rooted within the conceptual frame of sculpture, his works frequently “happen” on the intersection between what is traditionally considered visual art, design and architecture, challenging thus art’s conventional understanding, its classification, authenticity and the romantic notion of the artist. Moreover, making the subject of transformation a central theme of his practice, Rehberger’s work questions traditional modes of perception, awareness and temporality, creating a sense of transience, discontinuity and of ambiguity.
The current exhibition, the title of which, derives from a quote by George Best, a Northern Irish football player, who in one of his interviews said: “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”, brings together numerous groups of works, which aim to challenge the above mentioned perception of art, by bringing into play subjects, such as, art’s functionality, its reading, authenticity and perfection.

JAMES CASEBERE – ON THE WATER’S EDGE

Posted on 2019-12-23

In this arresting new series of images, Casebere continues his ever-evolving exploration of form at the intersection of architecture, sculpture and photography. In previous, well-known bodies of work, the artist depicted buildings and interiors based primarily on extant structures; this series, however, is distinguished by a marked change in Casebere’s conceptual approach. To create these salient new images, Casebere became the architect, often designing and building the structures he produced and then photographed.
