JOHN KØRNER – CRAZY WATERMELON SHIPPING

Posted on 2020-09-07

Picture yourself on the very tip of Jutland, on Grenen, a sand spit with a view of a nebulous parking zone for container ships and cruise liners carrying everything from giant, orange gas cylindersto tourists, food and many other things for the potential benefit of us on the shore looking out. A strategic spot for parking ships, the sea of Kattegat offers easy access to the whole world.
This is a key point of departure for John Kørner’s (b. 1967) Crazy Watermelon Shipping. Revolving around issues of consumption and goods in transit, the exhibition examines the global market and how we experience it in everyday life, say at the supermarket when we debate what items to place in our baskets. Some people have only one option when it comes to shopping, others have a few more, while others again have nothing but shopping options.

MAI-THU PERRET – PIÈCES ENFANTINES

Posted on 2020-09-07

The glazed ceramics created only this year, whose witty titles the artist borrowed from a Zen manual, are the result of Mai-Thu Perret’s direct physical interaction with the material clay, which in turn is based on a millennia-old tradition of craftsmanship. The wall objects show a relief-like tactile quality, resembling paintings in their nuanced colouring and hanging. With the work A
Russian Doll (2018), a three-part sculpture made of glazed ceramic, Perret negotiates the relationship between monumentality and the human body. She takes up a motif from folk art that traditionally recalls motherhood and reproduction; associations with sarcophagi or grave vessels could arise.

CLAUDIA WIESER – LOBBY

Posted on 2020-09-07

In order to better understand Wieser’s work, one has to consider her four-year apprenticeship at the famous blacksmith’s workshop Bergmeister in Ebersberg, which she completed before taking up her studies with Axel Kasseböhmer and Markus Oehlen at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. The workshop specialises in simple, early modern designs for clerical, cultural and political institutions. Wieser has never lost this connection to craftsmanship, in which pragmatic and artistic ideas merge (brought to perfection by the Bauhaus). With her, pedestals and mirror pieces, photo wallpapers, wall reliefs and podiums are always to be seen within a wider context, as elements in space that evoke a certain mood – and here we have come full circle, to Wieser’s long-standing work in the field of set design for film.

MARC HUNDLEY – IN ANOTHER COUNTRY

Posted on 2020-08-31

New York-based Marc Hundley’s practice is known for his unique way of encapsulating moments that can be considered intimate and solitary. Lyrics lifted from songs, text found in books and poetry, along with found imagery all lend themselves to Hundley’s hand-painted ‘posters’ and printed Xerox works, inscribed with the date and address of when and where the source was encountered.

SUSAN PHILIPSZ – SLEEP CLOSE AND FAST

Posted on 2020-08-31

Sleep Close and Fast presents a new seven channel sound installation featuring recordings of lullabies sung in the artist’s own voice. Culled from a variety of sources including cult horror films, opera and literature, the lullabies chosen all share dark and haunting undertones. Emanating from stainless steel barrels, the sculptural acoustics suggest deep space, distance and memory. The voice recordings are accompanied by a percussion beat set to the rhythm of the artist’s heartbeat, acting as a metronome for the lullaby.

LUCIO FONTANA / PABLO PICASSO WITH YAN PEI-MING

Posted on 2020-08-31

Look at Me is a dialogue between the past and the present, the modern and the contemporary. The vibrant green and yellow of Fontana’s Concetto Spaziale, Attese from 1959 is juxtaposed by the 1969 work on paper Nu, homme a la pipe et amour by Pablo Picasso. The two evocative works are accompanied by large scale portraits of both Lucio Fontana and Pablo Picasso executed by Yan PeiMing.
