RENÉE GREEN – EXCERPTS A.1

Posted on 2021-06-14

Presented for the first time, these richly layered paintings provide dream-like narratives stemming from the time spent by the artist in Mexico during the 1980s, as well as that decade’s US-backed political violence and societal turmoil in Central and South America. The images call to mind the equivocal storytelling of Green’s 1994 bilingual novel, Camino Road, tracing a New York art student’s illusive reminiscence of a road trip to Mexico.

BRENT WADDEN

Posted on 2021-06-14

Brent Wadden describes his abstract woven work as paintings and works almost entirely with limited quantities of pre-used fibers sourced second hand. The amount of a given thread dictates the spectrums of color and this attitude of “make do and mend” is one Wadden has long observed in the small communities of his native Nova Scotia, where many folk artists work with materials they have directly at hand.

Wadden’s painting practice begins with drawings on paper, which serve as the study for his large scale woven paintings. As he shifts between mediums, Wadden synthesizes abstract painting and folk art, pursuing aesthetic works that explore the potential for beauty through ritual and intuition. These works prioritize the viewer’s gaze, working with color and pattern to provide a rich visual field that is both monumental and idiosyncratic.

GUILLERMO KUITCA

Posted on 2021-06-07

Informed by the worlds of architecture, music, theater and cartography, Guillermo Kuitca’s paintings seek to incite the potential for a theatrical experience. This summer, the celebrated Argentine artist returns to Hauser & Wirth Zürich with an exhibition of new and recent work exploring these long-standing motifs. Exhibited across the ground floor of the gallery, the presentation is divided into three distinct bodies of works: paintings from The Family Idiot series first exhibited in Los Angeles in 2019, new works including Kuitca’s House Plan series made during the 2020 lockdown in Buenos Aires, and the artist’s ongoing Theatre series.

TJORG DOUGLAS BEER – SIMSALABIM

Posted on 2021-06-07

Five monumental ceramic sculptures are located in the major room of the exhibition space. Each of them is placed on a base in different heights, of which the ones in steel are designed by the artist. Formally, they are reminiscent of rockets and bombs. While at the same time, they show human features. Stamped with various objects from the artist’s studio, the works function as a symbiosis of anthropomorphic representation and inanimate thing. Or as assemblages of a figure and a technical object. Tjorg Douglas Beer generates situations, scenarios and objects in his works. He translates influences from literature, music, politics and life in general in exaggerated form into new contexts.
