TweetErwin Olaf, Stages, is a exhibition of key series centered on the concept of performance, a recurring theme in the artist’s four-decade career.
Stages includes Olaf’s 1980s documentation of Amsterdam’s gay and nightlife scenes, highly produced series such as Hope (2005) and Grief (2007) that dramatize social norms, and ongoing engagement with dance. These tableaux — whether occurring on a social stage, theatrical stage, or studio set— portray beautiful but not necessarily camera-ready moments, often lit by a flash of unscripted emotional experience.

Raúl Gonzo stages relatable, yet unrealistic scenes of everyday life. In each of Gonzo’s highly saturated photographs, there are satirical and humorous nods to childhood, consumerism, music videos, Pop art, television game shows, Alfred Hitchcock films, and ideals of beauty. Gonzo employs models and performers to play the characters within his artist-made sets. His works present an interesting dichotomy: he asks viewers to embrace surface-level color and composition while questioning how American culture can be critiqued and reimagined through the smallest of details.

Pearson Sound returns to his Hessle Audio label with Which Way Is Up, a 4 track EP showcasing a range of textures and tempos with soundsystem pressure as the anchor. The 808-laced ‘Hornet’ kicks things off with a sound palette inspired as much by ’80s Miami as ’10s London. ‘Twister’ dials up the energy with a jagged lead and scattered breakbeats pulling in opposing directions, while the steppers pulse of ‘Slingshot’ evokes formative experiences at Subdub in Leeds. The EP is brought to a close with the blissed out title track ‘Which Way Is Up’, whose arpeggios dance around each other until they fizzle to breaking point.
TweetSculpture’s new album Max Ax is the product of constant recombination of wildcard sonic and visual elements into new forms in performance. Catching a live AV set by the duo is to enter a maximal portal into their visionary aesthetic, as Sutherland’s kaleidoscopic visual turntablism and Hayhurst’s analogue/digital hybrid of electronic pop and experimental splatter combine in free associations and unstable reactions.
Cross Processor is from the LP Max Ax, available on deluxe double gatefold 10” zoetrope disc and digital formats.
