BAPE – CHUSEN COLLECTION

Posted on 2024-05-06

Each button-down features a subtle cord at the bottom of the shirt for adjusting fit, along with two zippered pockets. On the right side of the chest is a small BAPE logo. The shorts are also made to be adjusted, featuring a built-in belt. The matching hats and T-shirts round out the lineup for a simple summertime outfit.

Chusen is a Japanese dying technique that originated around 150 years ago. While the garments may look as if they’ve been tie-dyed, Chusen uses a special setup where dye is poured on the fabric from the top and bleeds down, creating a blur effect. BAPE says that there are only a few machines in Japan capable of the process.

YONEN BY JAMES JEAN X BRAD KEECH

Posted on 2024-05-06

Jean and Keech have been toiling away, and the result is ‘Yonen’ – a “multiplane” print that’s a fresh category in their extensive portfolio. Encased in a custom-built frame, this piece features ten clear acrylic layers, each with its unique print. The layers stack up to create a 3D tableau that’s viewable from both sides, with a clear gloss rain effect adding a dynamic twist.

The frame itself is a work of art, decked out with brass embellishments that reveal hidden details as you explore the piece. It’s like each layer is whispering its tale of time and space.

MICHAEL KENNA – JAPAN A LOVE STORY

Posted on 2024-05-06

Michael Kenna has been photographing around the world for over fifty years. His in-depth explorations and imagery of Japan since 1987 stand out as perhaps his most distinguished and well-known works. In his own words, “On my first visit to Japan, I was blown away by the aesthetics, the spiritual and religious aspects, the curiosity of the people, their friendliness and generosity,” he says. “Later, I went up to Northern Hokkaido in the middle of winter, and it looked to me like a stark sumi-e ink painting, a white canvas with Kanji characters marked on it. I’ve been in love with the place ever since.”

An exceptional exhibition comprised of one hundred original silver gelatin prints, hand-crafted by Mr. Kenna, has been curated by Peter Fetterman. The exhibition will be presented by Nikkei, the Financial Times and Peter Fetterman Gallery in Tokyo, Los Angeles and London in 2024, celebrating half a century of work by the renowned British photographer, and his enduring relationship with Japan. The exhibition catalogue is designed by Hideyuki Taguchi and published by the distinguished Nazraeli Press, and a short film with unique footage of Mr. Kenna working in Japan will be presented by the French film-maker Richard Bonnet.

JONGSUK YOON – YELLOW MAY

Posted on 2024-05-06

For this exhibition, two expansive, mural-sized paintings April Mai (2023) and August (2024) are presented in the Main Gallery. Featuring poetic silhouettes of mountainscapes, they reference the border between North and South Korea, as well as the artist’s own childhood memories. Across a vast and mesmerizing pictorial space, Yoon’s unique approach to painting is found in atmospheric layers of highly gestural and variously textured brushstrokes. The colors, a rich palette of bright yellows, soft fuchsias, and pale blues, are also references to speci!c memories, such as azalea blossom-covered mountains in the Korean springtime. The disembodied forms of color present this profoundly fraught geopolitical terrain as an anti-monumental, illusory reverie.

THELMA

Posted on 2024-05-06

Inspired by a real-life experience of Margolin’s own grandmother, THELMA puts a clever spin on movies like MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business – despite what her daughter Gail (Posey), son-in-law Alan (Gregg), or grandson Danny might believe.
