KIERAN HEBDEN & WILLIAM TYLER – DARKNESS, DARKNESS

Posted on 2023-07-10

The intersection of country with electronica may not seem an obvious one, but Kieran Hebden and William Tyler have tapped into an enticing transatlantic fusion as their worlds collide. The 2020s so far have been abundantly collaborative for both of them: Hebden AKA Four Tet has joined Skrillex and Fred again.. for electrifying DJ sets, and relinked with Madlib, Thom Yorke, and Burial; William’s guitar mastery meanwhile has seen records with Marisa Anderson and his band The Impossible Truth. Now, the duo release the first taste of their talents combined.

‘Darkness, Darkness’ is a generous ten minute introduction to Hebden and Tyler’s musical partnership. Gentle sparks open with the natural plucks of acoustic guitar swimming in the electrical soundbath, the strings rippling tangibly as they are bent and manipulated. Soulful brass loops soon fade in, pouring desert sand onto the track as it shifts from ambiently informed experimentalism to roaring psychedelia with gritty guitars, downtempo rhythms, and a sample of Gloria Loring’s eponymous inspiration.

MC MORE EVIL MONKEYS BY RON ENGLISH X GOLEM

Posted on 2023-07-10

Turns out monkey’s aren’t so good at following directions. Ron English’s monkey trio returns for some fast-food inspired mischief with the new MC More Evil Monkeys 3-figure set from Golem, a new label from French brand Artoyz. Following in the footsteps of the artist’s previous sendups of the red/white/yellow mascot, this set features one monkey hearing evil, one making an extra effort to see evil and another speaking evil, loudly and clearly with his ‘Grin’. There’s also a fun (creepy?) monkey + clown synergy here.

An edition of 200.

EVELYN HOFER – EYES ON THE CITY

Posted on 2023-07-03

Evelyn Hofer (American, born Germany, 1922-2009) was a highly innovative photographer whose prolific career spanned five decades. Despite her extraordinary output, she was underrecognized during her lifetime and was notably referred to by New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer as “the most famous unknown photographer in America.” She made her greatest impact through a series of photobooks, published throughout the 1960s, devoted to European and American cities, including Florence, London, New York, Washington, DC, and Dublin, and a book focused on the country of Spain. Comprising more than one hundred vintage prints in both black and white and color, Eyes on the City, the artist’s first major museum exhibition in the United States in over fifty years, is organized around those publications. The photographs to be featured combine landscapes and architectural views with portraiture, conveying the unique character and personality of these urban capitals during a period of intense structural, social, and economic transformations after World War II.
