DARREL ELLIS – REGENERATION

Posted on 2023-06-19

As moving as it is complex, the multifaceted work of Darrel Ellis (1958–1992) restages a lost vision of Black selfhood and domesticity. His oeuvre has presented a formidable challenge to curators and scholars over the last thirty years for its unfinished tenor, a perception heightened by his untimely death due to AIDS-related causes at age 33. Although Ellis’ work was included in important contemporary surveys during his lifetime, including the 1989 exhibition Witnesses: Against Their Vanishing, organized by Nan Goldin, only now is it beginning to garner the attention it deserves. The exhibition Darrel Ellis: Regeneration offers the first comprehensive, scholarly survey of this pioneering artist, whose highly original merging of painting, printmaking, and photography anticipated current artistic interest in archive, appropriation, and personal narrative.

CHRISTOPH WEBER – FACING THE TECHNOSPHERE

Posted on 2023-06-19

In order to represent what eludes attempts to picture or imagine it, Christoph Weber employs materials from three different spheres that overlap in the world of our lived experience: concrete as the global building material that shapes the human-made technosphere; fossil rock as the material of the earth’s crust, the so-called lithosphere; and various mixtures of beeswax as a material representation of the biosphere. For his fourth solo exhibition, Weber has created a dense system of references to the horizons of meaning inscribed within these materials. On display are two groups of current works, the first of which symbolizes the direct confrontation of the three spheres, while the second attempts to feel its way toward the calculation of complex transformations.

DUKE + DEXTER X PLAYBOY

Posted on 2023-06-19

As one of the most widely recognized lifestyle magazines in the world, Playboy is approaching its 70th anniversary. Before it converted to online-only in 2020, each issue featured a combination of advice columns, sporting highlights, exclusive interviews, and of course, the Playboy Pin Up.

Now, to celebrate a trio of collaborations — while continuing to align with seven decades of Playboy – Duke + Dexter has brought back its “Sketch” capsule for a fourth installment. The collection features a new line of D+D’s classic Wilde Penny Loafers, printed with three of Playboy’s most memorable cover shoots across the vamp.

Featuring five new styles, the Playboy x D+D collaboration welcomes the Wilde Sketch IV — a continuation of the duo’s second collaborative capsule. Additionally, the duo includes the Wilde 1975 Cover, taking it back to March of 1975, where D+D revitalizes three classic covershoots.

Meanwhile, the Wilde 1988 Cover takes things back to a cover shoot featuring Laurie Carr’s eyes and mouth. Rounding off the collection, the two final pairs reminisce on the years of 2015 and 2012, referencing classic cover girls such as Gia Marie, Stephanie Branton, Ciara Price, Chelsie Aryn, Roxanna June, Val Keil, and Audrey Allen.

THE SMILE OF HOPE – BLACK/PINK BY KIK

Posted on 2023-06-19

Thai artist Kik is set to release a new version of her cute, contradictory art toy. The Smile of Hope – Black/Pink resin features a smiling hand giving the middle finger. And to top off the unusual design, the hand grows in a pot. The figure is a fun reminder to rise above trying times despite the urge to do otherwise. Or perhaps to ‘cultivate’ kindness.

An edition of 10.
