JULIEN CECCALDI – GOURMANDISES

Posted on 2022-01-31

Working in painting, sculpture, and comic books, Julien Ceccaldi explores a set of archetypal characters that morph and develop in different iterations of themselves. Influenced by the Shōjo manga genre — which focuses on romantic relationships and heightened emotions, Ceccaldi portrays characters as yearning or aspiring in some form or another: for love, sex or success. Attention or affirmation is sought through different means, and Ceccaldi’s world tends to be split into two polarised types of being: hulking, muscular, glowing bodies – aloof targets of sexual and romantic desire – and the unnoticed, exhausted other in this unrequited dyad. Through compositions framing the gaunt, almost repulsive, figure as a lead protagonist, the artist hints at the grace and nobility lying underneath their off-putting traits.

SUZANNE JACKSON – IN NATURE’S WAY…

Posted on 2022-01-31

For her first exhibition at The Modern Institute, Savannah-based artist Suzanne Jackson presents a new body of sculpted paintings. Jackson’s life’s work is multifaceted; spanning five decades, Jackson has excelled as a painter, poet, dancer, teacher, curator and theatre designer. Breaking away from the structure of stretched canvas or paper, Jackson re-examines the medium and abstraction as a genre.

RICHARD HUGHES – PAPERWORK

Posted on 2022-01-24

Richard Hughes’ practice primarily centres on the transformative effect of time on a place or an object via deterioration, or how it can be transubstantiated into a dissimilar situation.
At The Modern Institute’s Brick Space Richard Hughes presents works on paper for the first time. During the UK lockdowns Hughes began re-exploring the medium, making use of rudimentary materials and limited space. The initial sketches began as proposals for potential sculptures, works to be made when the limitations were lifted, but they soon evolved into works that held their own footing. Unconsciously they illustrated a collected mindset pondering something greater than the self that can be enhanced from isolation, feeling the vastness illustrated through the minutiae of the everyday.

ADIDAS SPEZIAL PRE-SPRING 2022 COLLECTION

Posted on 2022-01-24

The collection’s footwear selection is made up of six styles across five unique silhouettes. First up, the Moscrop SPZL is a completely reworked shoe inspired by the archival Raider silhouette. Comprising a technical Cordura upper combined with suede accents, the distinctive look stays true to the brand’s hybrid approach. The Winterhill SPZL continues with the seasonal focus as the classic Spezial silhouette is reworked with speckled laces, a technical ripstop upper, suede accents, and an adi-Tex membrane. Next up is the Lothertex SPZL – a technical take on the Lotherton silhouette. The shoe boasts a leather upper, a gusset tongue, and an adi-Tex membrane.

The Carnforth SPZL, meanwhile, is a seasonal take on a leisure shoe. A new hybrid, designed for outdoor-lovers, the silhouette features a full-grain leather upper. Last, but certainly not least, two vibrant colorways of the Barrowland SPZL cap off the footwear offering. A brand new silhouette with a classic terrace flat look, the eye-catching shoes feature fresh suede uppers matched with gum outsoles.

Transitioning from footwear to apparel, adidas Spezial’s Pre-Spring 2022 collection features a number of military-inspired garments – led by the Barrowland Jacket. Based on the classic Horwich anorak from SS17, the fully functional outerwear piece features technical pocket details and sealed seams. Another statement outerwear garment in the collection, the Trongate Jacket offers a carefully considered construction with a multi-pocket chest, sealed seams, and a mesh lining.

Two tops then pay homage to the brand’s inimitable sportswear heritage and signature design language. The timeless Modtrefoil Crew is updated with a brushed cotton inner, while the Meanwood Polo is given a khaki colour refresh. The Anderston Top and Pant round out the apparel selection as a matching set with a nod to vintage military silhouettes. The top boasts ripstop pockets while both pieces are composed of a plain weave fabric.

The latest adidas Spezial collection arrives in limited quantities on February 3rd and is available through Confirmed and selected retailers.

CHRISTOPHER RUSSELL – THE SPANGLE MAKER

Posted on 2022-01-24

Gitterman Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of recent work by Christopher Russell. Russell challenges the traditional conception of photography as producer of evidence by limiting the functionality of his lens to make fuzzy or hazy color photographs. The resulting images, abstract and ambiguous, form the foundation for drawings of the artist’s imaginary vistas. Russell draws by scratching through the emulsion with a razor, revealing the white fiber base of the print. Each artwork is at once a photograph, a drawing, and a bas-relief.
