IBRAHIM MAHAMA – LAZARUS

Posted on 2021-09-13

Mahama’s point of departure for the exhibition is ‘Nkrumah Voli-ni’, an abandoned building located in the northern city of Tamale in Ghana where the artist lives and works. Kwame Nkrumah is the name of the first president of Ghana, while Voli-ni, which literally translates as ‘inside the hole’, invokes excavation, teleportation and transformation. In bringing together these two words, the site is not only indebted to history but, at the same time, carries mythical associations. One of many concrete, Brutalist-style silos built to store grain and other food during the post-independence era, it was abandoned in 1966 and became obsolete, flooded and host to an ecosystem of fish, reptiles, birds and a large colony of bats. Driven by an interest in the way time is encapsulated in these architectural structures, Mahama has been photographing and researching silos since 2015, and finally acquired this building with the intention of converting it into a cultural institution. During the exhumation and restoration process, he made the decision to protect its dominant life forms and to keep the bats as co-habitants of the space. In so doing, Mahama is opening up an ecological dimension to the project’s impetus and activity.

Eastpak has now partnered with London-based label Aries for its latest collaboration. The tactical-focused collection features six of Eastpak’s styles, which mix a tie-dye camouflage print from the label’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection with utilitarian detailing.

The collection includes a range of signature Eastpak silhouettes, including the Padded and Shopper styles. Both are finished with the collection’s tie-dye camo print, as well as military-inspired detailing such as gear loops, a security pocket and a carabiner on the Padded, and nylon webbing links on the Shopper. Smaller styles — such as the Bum Bag, Cullen and Talky, continue to incorporate the tactical elements, as well as featuring the phrase “Are Cults a Danger?”

ALFREDO JAAR – THE STRUCTURE OF IMAGES

Posted on 2021-09-13

In our image-saturated and media-obsessed world, what stories remain untold? Employing images, lights, and mirrors, Alfredo Jaar (Chilean, b. 1956) asks us to acknowledge subjects who are often under-recognized. Projects range in scope and subject: as one artwork focuses on an Ethiopian refugee amid the Eastern Sudan crisis, another observes remarkable but overlooked women including human rights lawyer Shada Nasser, author and activist Nawal El Saadawi, and politician Camila Vallejo. Featuring a selection of key works and installations that span three decades, The Structure of Images showcases Jaar’s critical approach to addressing injustice in our world.
