PYE CORNER AUDIO – WHERE THINGS ARE HOLLOW 2

Posted on 2020-07-13

Pye Corner Audio’s 2017 EP Where Things Are Hollow is one of the most lush and evocative releases in the producer’s extensive catalogue. That record featured slow-burning techno tracks whose halcyon atmospherics drew from Balearic, kosmische and IDM, plus more ambient entries which maintained the vibe while stripping out the drums.

Now, three years on, Pye Corner Audio has issued a sequel to Where Things Are Hollow. Another four-track EP, Where Things Are Hollow 2 inhabits a similarly vivid sonic world to the first volume. While ‘Self Synchronise’ and ‘Weather The Storm’ may run at slightly quicker tempos than the steady pulse of EP one’s ‘Resist’, Pye Corner Audio’s pluming pads and chunky synthetic basslines very much demonstrate a through-line between the two records. Moreover, Where Things Are Hollow 2 closes out with ‘Phase B’, a typically contemplative piece of weightless synth work that, to modern ears, shares sonic space with Craven Faults.

MANUEL LEÓN

León’s starting point is whatever others take for granted. A painter, who knows that he lives “out of time”, needs his hand to speak, like the figure in Ventriloquist of Herself (La Ventrílocua de sí misma), where a well-known children’s puppet may be delivering a speech, a story about something still to be revealed. Count von Count, the godfather of basic mathematics for a generation, keeps doing his sums, but looking at the composition for a while in silence, we realize that she is the one pulling the strings, with her mouth closed, in silence, possibly telling us a tale.

PATRICIA – TURTLE FUNK

Posted on 2020-07-13

Titled after his family’s childhood nickname for him, Maxyboy serves as a window to Ravitz’ range of musical interests. “Myokymia,” “Downlink” and “Crushed Velvet” highlight Ravitz’s penchant for intricate drum programming; while album closer Ctenophora hints towards his drumless sensibilities. Ranging from driving and somatic (“Dripping,” “Turtle Funk”), to ambient (“Julia Set”) to acid (“Dew Point,” “Dr. Oetker’s Ristorante”), each song carries an evocative, questioning quality — something any listener can enhance for themselves by closing the eyes and letting the sounds course through.
