GEORGES ROUSSE – UTOPIA

Posted on 2020-07-13

The ‘physical interventions’ he performs in the spaces portrayed in his photographs continue to fascinate and confuse the observer.Even in the digital age, this fascination lives on. Rousse’s ingenious manipulations using constructions, drawings and panting are more surprising than ever in a world where the boundaries between reality and virtual reality are increasingly blurred. Using colour, light and architectural elements, Rousse transforms the three-dimensionality of the space into a two-dimensional photographic surface. Does reality become vision or vision become reality?

ANDREAS GEFELLER – SOMA

Posted on 2020-07-13

“A brave new world”. The work of Andreas Gefeller shows parallels to Aldous Huxley’s novel. This also explains the title of the collection of photographs: “Soma”, the name of the drug which is meant to alter and make reality bearable in Huxley’s literary universe.

The photographic work “Soma” by the German photographer offers insights into an artificial, single purpose microcosm from the year 2000, showcasing itself under bright, artificial lighting. This world was entirely created by man. Night is arbitrarily turned into day. Indeed, the former appears to literally outshine the latter.

The photographs show a coastal strip of Gran Canaria bathed in light, despite being nocturnal views. A newly constructed, brightly illuminated holiday paradise is presented as a complete work of art – made up of repetitive structures and geometric shapes – baring itself under a deep night sky.

Exhibition runs through to September 25th, 2020

MONA ARDELEANU – SOFT CRUSH

Posted on 2020-07-13

Patterned fabrics, lace, tassels or furs form the elements from which Mona Ar- deleanu creates mysterious objects. Her works attract the visitor’s eye, the soft fabric evoke warmth, traditional patterns recall memories of the familiar. “Soft Crush” is, on the one hand, the description of a spontaneous attraction and at the same time an expression of the soft materiality of the depicted objects. For the artist, fabrics carry emotions, they create identity as well as uniformity. At the same time, they form the boundary between the inside and the outside, offering protection from the cold or from glances. The patterns and shapes shown create associations with canopies, lanterns and lace doilies. Ardeleanau draws non-hierarchically from European and Asian tradition. Design and handicrafts are important sources of inspiration for her. This is evident in the artful draping, interweaving and intertwining and in the references to handicraft aids such as embroidery or weaving frames.

SCOTT MYLES – SWAPPING POCKETS

Posted on 2020-07-13

Presenting a selection of works produced from Scott Myles’ ongoing project ‘This Way Out’, initially originating from his most recent solo exhibition at the gallery, where Myles relocated his studio for the duration of the exhibition which allowed an exploration of the artist’s practice within the context of a public exhibition.
To work inside the gallery was the exhibition; a kind of simultaneous display of production and presentation. The presence of the artist and assistant, the tools and materials for production, and the artworks throughout the gallery all vied for the viewer’s attention. Such dichotomies are at the core of the artist’s practice and ‘This Way Out’ was a sincere attempt at bringing about a new untested situation for Myles and his audience.

JOACHIM BROHM – LESS AND MORE

Posted on 2020-07-13

Works of Modernism are constantly being interpreted, reinterpreted, indeed collected and stored away. Modernist architecture is being renovated, redesigned, torn down, reconstructed. Original functions and purposes are thus being altered, occasionally forgotten, but sometimes even optimised and reinvented. New meanings and perceptions for these, often iconic objects and buildings, on their passage from the 20th into the 21st century, arise through these processes.

Brohm confronts the enduring enigma of Modernism conceptually with his generation’s means – whereby his work with the camera is being prompted and supported by Bauhaus architecture and photography as its historical components. Groundbreaking innovations for the development of photography at the time and today become the transparency for his contemporary examination of the medium.
