MAIA FLORE – FLOWING IN STILLNESS

Posted on 2020-02-03

Obsessed by the art of dance, Maia uses the camera to record the figure’s motion in still photographs at the edge of a transformation. From wrinkles, to the drapes of the garment we wear, our bodies constantly unfold themselves tracing chapters of our passage. As seen in the Birth of Venus, by Sandro Botticelli, Venus stands at the edge of a shell with the wind showering her, she holds a tension in her stillness with grace. This tension in stillness inspires Maia, as she conducts her movements with the figure in mind.

In her previous work, colorful costumes has allowed Maia’s characters to find their personality. Successively, the red, yellow and green dress tinted this single character of a wacky and absurd gestures in surrealist scenes. With this almost monochromatic palette, the presence of the woman transforms the scenes into a daydream painting that very much recall the impressionist desire for an ideal stimulation of our senses.

SENTA SIMOND

Posted on 2020-02-03

Simond’s work focuses on an intimate approach to the female body and portraiture. Her photographs – distinctive in their slightly off-kilter approach to composition and expression – feature a circle of acquaintances and respond to the connection that can occur between artist and sitter under the right context and circumstance. Sensual as opposed to sexual, collaborative as opposed to voyeuristic, by turns the photographer elicits affection, boredom, reflection, peace, and laughter in her subjects. “They are my friends, and friends of friends, some very close, that I have shot for 10 years,” she says of her portrait subjects.

“I choose them because I find something intriguing in their character, their attitude; they all have something strong and soft at the same time. There is something very specific that I am fascinated by, and I usually find this in women.”

As for her process Simond prefers to shoot off set and with simple white backgrounds when possible. Says Simond, “The equipment is simple and we, the subject and I, form a trust. This minimal method allows me to get close to my subject. I try to catch the subjects in subtle and intimate moments. Also, being a woman photographing women helps me to capture these intimate images, and that was something I wanted to explore.”

Y.Z. KAMI – NIGHT PAINTINGS

Posted on 2020-02-03

Kami’s tenebrous Night Paintings (2017–) are composed largely from a single shade of indigo—said to be the color of the night—mixed with various gradations of white. Each canvas in this new series is filled with blue-whitish apparitions that float just past the limits of materiality and concrete representation. These outlines shift between seemingly solid, liquid, and gaseous states—an osseous structure melts into a milky swirl, which in turn evaporates into a coil of smoke—yet their true forms and references ultimately remain veiled beneath hazy brushwork.

XAVIER ROBLES DE MEDINA – FAYA LOBI

Posted on 2020-02-03

Faya Lobi means fiery love, or love of fire.

In Suriname, it is the Sranan given name for its national flower, the Ixori coccinea , a flowering plant of South-Indian, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan origins. Other names it is known by are jungle geranium, flame of the woods, or jungle flame. The faya lobi grows abundantly in Suriname, producing flowers all year, as it does in South Asia. In Suriname, faya lobi became a symbol for love, long lasting and ardent passion.
There is a fiery love that burns in the deep heart of the South American jungles. This fire is different from the fires that have burned down and deforested the Amazon, it exists intrinsically, and is passed down to those born in the lineage of resistance. In the northeast Amazon basin, a fiery love welcomed the Ndyuka, now descendants of marooned slaves who for four centuries continuously build resistance and sanctuaries.
