HELEN PASHGIAN

Posted on 2019-12-23

Pashgian’s primary objective is to explore light as both a medium and subject of sculpture. Originally pursuing an academic career in art history, Pashgian planned to begin her doctoral research on the 17th century Dutch masters, who were renowned for their innovative ability to paint light. By the early 1960s, she had turned her attention to art making and began working with industrial materials, experimenting with casting techniques that would allow resin to encapsulate light within a solid form. Part of a pioneering program of artists in residence at the California Institute of Technology, from 1970-71 she was among the first artists and scientists given access to numerous materials developed within the California aerospace industry that had recently become declassified. During her time in the residency program, she pushed the boundaries of her experimentation, leading her to dramatically increase the scale of her work using highly volatile polymer compounds.

THE LEVEE – A PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH

Posted on 2019-12-23

Exhibited in its entirety for the first time outside India, the suite has been acquired by the Cincinnati Art Museum through the generosity of the artist and Experimenter Gallery, Kolkata. The Cincinnati Art Museum is the first American museum to exhibit Hura’s work and the first public institution to collect his photographs. The exhibition is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue—the first substantial book publication about the artist.

While The Levee consists primarily of black and white photographs, the exhibition also includes hand-drawn maps and ambient sound. Unexpected color and evocative natural materials support the artist’s perception of tenderness in his American experience. Communal seating and browsable photobooks in the gallery will invite reflection and consideration of The Levee in larger context.

TORNISCHE – INTERIORISMO

Posted on 2019-12-23

Julio Tornero and Hanna Chamiarytskaya (aka Anneq) got together in Madrid after having met through mutual friends. Immediately, they bonded and found musical chemistry between them. They went into the studio and began revisiting Julio’s unreleased archives, incorporating what he had already recorded years ago with fresh sounds and Neu Deutsche Welle style duets. The result is a modern, chaotic, take on 80s European new wave, 90s Detroit electro, and contemporary indie electro-pop. The energy level is always high, the melodies are catchy and the vocal delivery and lyrics futuristic, subversive, italo-disco-punk, and surreal.
