SWATCH – BIG BOLD JELLYFISH

Posted on 2019-12-30

Swatch the Swiss watchmaker has crafted a blown-up version of its iconic 1985 Jellyfish, bringing the original 34 mm case to a more modern 47 mm measurement. Aside from the increased size, however, much of the original design elements have been retained, with the transparent dial and case giving full view of the quartz movement beneath the bauhaus-styled red, blue, and yellow hands, paired with a translucent caseback and a silicone strap.

SANLÉ SORY – VOLTA PHOTO

Posted on 2019-12-30

Sanlé Sory’s portraits are key documents of the exuberant youth culture in Burkina Faso following the small West African nation’s independence from France. After learning to use a twin-lens Rolleiflex 6×6 camera and process prints, Sory opened his studio, Volta Photo, in 1960, the same year his country (then called Upper Volta) began its transition from remote colony to independent nation. He worked as a regional reporter, event photographer and record sleeve illustrator active in the city’s dynamic music scene. Most notably, however, Sory was one of Bobo-Dioulasso’s earliest and finest studio photographers.

London-based label YMC and Japanese imprint ASICS have teamed up once more for the release of two SportStyle Tarther OG sneakers. The ASICS SportStyle Tarther OG comes in “Blue/Multi” and “Caramel.” The sneakers sport lashings of suede throughout the upper, adding the premium detail to the toe box, eyestay and heel, while leather has been used on ASICS’ iconic mid-panel branding and for the heel cup.

Most notably, YMC adds an Aztec-inspired print in muted shades of blue, pink and yellow for the “Blue/Multi” pair and pink, brown and purple tones for the “Caramel” pair all over the shoes’ base.

YAMAMOTO MASAO – ITTEKI

Posted on 2019-12-23

Focusing on Bonsai, the Japanese art of cultivating miniaturized potted trees, this series of toned, gelatin silver prints continues Yamamoto’s exploration of the emotional power of photography through landscape and his surrounding environment.

Speaking about this series, Yamamoto notes the cultural significance of Bonsai, “Since ancient times, people have considered Bonsai to be a microcosmic representation of the whole universe, residing in a single pot, and the proper way to appreciate Bonsai was to place them on a “tokonoma” alcove in a traditional Japanese tatami room.” In his characteristically playful approach, Yamamoto displaces the trees from their usual environment, setting them within dramatic landscapes, and star-filled skies, occasionally enhanced by miniscule drops (itteki) of gold paint on the photographic surface. His manipulation of perspective creates quite startling results, in which the trees tower over mountain ranges and appear larger than the moon, or burst through the clouds into the heavens.

JOHNNA ARNOLD – ANALOGUES

Posted on 2019-12-23

Analogues: Johnna Arnold features an image from Arnold’s series From Inside This Earth, a body of unique photographic C-prints made by enlarging individual samples of used motor oil. A thin layer of oil is poured on a glass plate, which is then placed inside a photographic enlarger. The enlarger sends light through the plate and lens, onto the light-sensitive paper below, creating colorful abstractions of accidental beauty.
