FRED W. MCDARRAH – THE VOICE OF THE VILLAGE

Posted on 2019-11-11

The Voice of the Village examines New York City from the tumultuous 1960s to the dawn of the 1970s through the lens of photographer Fred W. McDarrah. A curious, knowledgeable, and indefatigable visual chronicler, McDarrah created an encyclopedic archive of culture and politics for the alternative newsweekly The Village Voice; from the Beats of the 1950s to the counterculture of the ’60s to the Stonewall uprising and major political events of the early 1970s. The exhibition features images of cultural icons such as Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan, with a particular focus on the agitation for civil rights and anti–Vietnam War demonstrations.

Exhibition runs through to December 31st, 2019

GORDON PARKS – THE NEW TIDE EARLY WORK 1940-1950

Posted on 2019-11-11

“A guy who takes a chance, who walks the line between the known and unknown, who is unafraid of failure, will succeed.” – Gordon Parks

Gordon Parks was part of what author Richard Wright called “the new tide” of African Americans who were pressing for respect and racial equality in the 1940s. Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in collaboration with The Gordon Parks Foundation, Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940-1950 explores the early years of Parks’ career as an influential photographer who captured the essence of the civil rights movement in addition to breaking barriers for African Americans.

From his fashion photographs to his thoughtful depictions of American life, Parks used the camera as his tool for proclaiming the value of an American community built on freedom and equality. This exhibition offers an expansive and intimate look at how this pioneering artist became one of the most influential photographers of his day.

GALCHER LUSTWERK – SPEED

Posted on 2019-11-11

Galcher Lustwerk’s Ghostly International debut is a clandestine rendezvous of half-dreamt nightlifes and smudged club dossiers, redacted like faded memories. Free associations on life as a recurring visitor, a deep house cover agent swaggering on and off the beat from city to city. As with most sleuthing, there are dead ends, transient (dis)engagements, faked documents, puzzles, and half-truths illuminated by strobe lights and cell phones. As he fills the file on Information, evidence suggests that Lustwerk is a singular and savvy logician.

RECONDITE – CURE

Posted on 2019-11-11

As electronic musician Lorenz Brunner sketched his vision for the first Recondite full-length on Ghostly in five years he took a step back to assess who and where he was as an artist. 2013’s Hinterland accelerated a progression — he’s since been touring around the world and releasing music with labels such as Hotflush and his own Plangent Records — yet, for him, the album cast a shadow of pressure that widened over time. As with most art forms, perhaps especially music, there is an expectation to change, to creatively pivot elsewhere with each project. After careful consideration, Brunner rejects this notion with his new work, opting alternately to use the icy Hinterland as an aesthetic and tonal template for a like-minded map of evocative compositions aptly titled after the German word “stillstand,” now presented as Dwell.
