THE HOODIE

Posted on 2019-11-25

This unprecedented exhibition explores the role of a fashion garment as a socio-political carrier. The hoodie tells many stories – tales of social inequality, youth culture, subculture, police brutality, racism, privacy, fear and style. It is a garment that sparks a range of emotions, communicating all manner of social and cultural ideas and nuances depending on the gender, geography, age, conduct and ethnicity of the wearer and, in turn, the prejudices and politics of the viewer. Popularised by Champion in the 1930s, the hoodie was a practical solution for workmen; it is now, arguably, Western Fashion’s last truly political garment.

The hoodie is at the centre of contemporary dress, hyped as a trend and a must-have item, but elsewhere, is also a signifier of moral panic, banned by certain institutions and dissected by the media as an emblem of inequality, crime or deviancy.

SIMEN JOHAN – CONSPIRACY OF RAVENS

Posted on 2019-11-25

Known for his psychologically charged depictions of the natural world, Johan intensifies the drama in his new work, featuring animals in turbulent scenes of power play and theatrical poses. The artist attributes the shift to the current socio-political climate, as well as to his continued interest in life as a play of fictions, shaped by desires, fears and illusion.

Simen Johan originally drew attention in the early 90s by merging digital manipulation with traditional darkroom techniques. Since then, he has developed a hybrid form of image-making, integrating candidly-photographed animals and landscapes with modest studio and location setups. The artist travels near and far to photograph his source material, finding inspiration anywhere from the local zoo to the jungles of Costa Rica or the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. Countless hours are then spent assembling disparate images into a unifying whole as he edits, composes and populates each mise-en-scène.

ROBERT & SHANA PARKEHARRISON – ACTS WITHOUT WORDS

Posted on 2019-11-25

In this new series, the artists continue to create photographs that explore man’s relationship to the earth, and the ramifications of our continued disregard for its longevity. These staged photographs, reminiscent of theater or film stills, elicit a silent scream, begging us to listen to nature. It’s these acts, without words, that have inspired this new body of work that invites the viewer to finish the story, allowing various endings to an ongoing narrative.

GERHARD RICHTER – PRINTS

Posted on 2019-11-25

Throughout his distinguished career, Richter has remained at the forefront of contemporary abstraction and image-making, embracing haptic process and technological advancements in equal measure and harnessing found imagery in groundbreaking ways. Editions are a central feature of his practice. He modifies details and sometimes entire compositions from his oeuvre, producing artworks that are simultaneously self-referential and new. Divergent in medium, scale, and style, the editions mirror Richter’s mercurial artistic processes and explore the dynamic relationship between source image and pictorial representation.

Many of Richter’s prints are based on personal photographs. He produced his earliest edition Hund (Dog) (1965) by sweeping a paintbrush across a still-damp screenprint depicting the family dog; blurred with a visible texture from the brush hairs, the resulting image is a print that references both painting and photography.
