MARGOT BERGMAN – FAMILY ALBUM

Posted on 2019-07-15

Bianca Bondi has chosen an enigmatic title, inspired by a scientific study that a particular moth’ species had developed the ability to drink the tears of sleeping birds1. If nothing in the show directly illustrates this surprising observation, the choice of words however illustrates Bianca Bondi’s impulse to enrich her work with natural sciences and stories as well as religious culture, esoteric or magical. The movement of the bird’s tears when ingested by the moth correspond to a recurring analogy in the artist’s works: the idea of passage, the mutation of matter and its circulation.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD X ASICS

Posted on 2019-07-15

Vivienne Westwood and ASICS have reunited for a new drop that centers around a trio of heritage trainers, bolstered by bold graphics and subtle details.

A GEL-Saga, Hyper GEL-Lyte and GEL-DS Trainer OG are all on hand, with the GEL-Saga appearing in the same form as the leaked silhouette seen in July. That all-white model is the tamest of the bunch, with the GEL-DS Trainer OG and Hyper GEL-Lite sporting bold color-blocking and imagery of François Boucher paintings, respectively. The latter is directly inspired by Westwood’s Fall/Winter 1990 collection, and all the shoes boast thematic insoles with imagery of Boucher’s Daphnis and Chloe. Small “CHAOS” tags, logos at the tongue and patterned outsoles accent each of the shoes, which also sport embroidered Westwood orbs on the heels.

SLEEP WITH THE FISHES

Posted on 2019-07-15

Sleep with the Fishes, that explores the formal repetitions and shared motifs of fish in both historical and contemporary photography. Fish have been the subject of art throughout history, beginning in ‘primitive’ art from many cultures. In ancient civilizations of the West, fish were a continuous depiction of an important food source. As time went on, fish began to hold more symbolic meanings, such as in the Hellenistic period they were known to represent a divine source of life.

Decorative fish designs of the Greeks and Romans were often tied to mythological significance and later adopted by early Christians as religious symbols. Fish markets became important cultural trade centers and destinations for wealthy tourists who made the Grand Tour of Europe to view the roots of western civilization, such as the Roman Fish Market, Arch of Octavius, portrayed by German painter Albert Bierstadt in 1858. Nearly a century later, Walker Evans captured a Fish Market Near Birmingham, Alabama in 1936, taken while working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) photography program with the goal of documenting and reporting the plight of Americans during the Great Depression.

TRINE SØNDERGAARD – ‘GULDNAKKE’

Posted on 2019-07-15

SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film presents “Guldnakke,” Trine Søndergaard’s acclaimed photographic series of contemporary women wearing traditional Danish bonnets from the 19th century. A guldnakke, which translates as “golden neck,” is an intricately embroidered women’s hat, fashionable among the wives of wealthy farmers and worn as a symbol of status among the peasant class. Until the mid-1800s, textiles made of gold thread or gold beads were created solely for the royalty, nobility and the church, and therefore these bonnets hold a special meaning in the social history of Denmark.

TIMOTHY DUFFY – BLUE MUSE

Posted on 2019-07-15

For the past several years, Timothy Duffy (American, born 1963) has created one-of-a-kind direct positive tintype portraits of American musicians. Despite the importance of these musicians and the national legacy they represent, most remain little known. Duffy’s masterful photographs, shot with a large camera, big enough to hold the plates you see in this gallery, celebrate these important creators, custodians, purveyors, and performers of American music. The process he uses, the tintype, an American innovation, dates back to the nineteenth century. It requires coating a metal plate with a wet, syrupy solution that holds light-sensitive chemicals. The plate must then be placed immediately in the camera and exposed to the subject before it dries completely. Much like the improvisational qualities of the music that his subjects play, the best tintypes often result from incidental effects of the process-drying too quickly, oversensitivity, slight ripples in the surface of the emulsion.
