FRED WILSON – AFRO KISMET

Posted on 2019-04-15

Fred Wilson’s Afro Kismet lays bare questions of visibility: where are Africans in historical accounts of early Europe? How have the narratives institutionalized by museums erased the presence of black individuals of the past and present? Over seven trips to Istanbul, Fred Wilson researched these questions, continuing the project he started in Re: Claiming Egypt and Speak of Me as I Am, his shows at the 1992 Cairo Biennale and 2003 Venice Biennale. In those works, Wilson revealed the history of black people living in each respective region — histories made obsolete in the Western collective imagination. He continues to interrogate
the peripheral treatment of such histories in Afro Kismet, this time mining the history of Istanbul.

CARLA DAL FORNO – SO MUCH BETTER

Posted on 2019-04-15

Carla dal Forno launches her own label, Kallista Records, with her first original single in over a year. This two-track 7-inch record begins a bold year for dal Forno, who takes her lone kosmische misanthropy onto fertile new ground. The a-side single, ‘So Much Better,’ sees dal Forno step out from the shadows of emotional ambiguity into the vulnerable territory of anecdotal song-writing. Lyrics that echo the irrational passions of love scorned, in truth reveal a self-assured artist confessing to resentment which propels her.

CLEVELAND – NDSI

Posted on 2019-04-15

Electronic music has been obsessed with its past canon for a while. Ongoing trends such as the reissue frenzy or the obsession with vintage equipment make it harder than it should be to find music that feels absolutely contemporary. But Cleveland’s ‘nDSi’ is a prime example of it. His new double-EP showcases an evolution of his sound into more minimalist and forward-looking grounds.
