TEVA GC100 COLLECTION

Posted on 2019-02-25

The Grand Canyon National Park was founded on Feb. 26, 1919 in Arizona, and footwear brand Teva is honoring the 100-year centennial with its spring GC100 Collection. Teva was founded in the surroundings of the Grand Canyon and has taken inspiration from the 6 million-year-old natural wonder for a collection of all-terrain sandals. Each style features a unique strap pattern that takes cues from the Grand Canyon’s layered red rocks, meandering rivers, and spectrum of sunset hues.

Teva is also donating $100K to the Grand Canyon Conservancy to restore trails and fund environmental education programs for underserved youth.

LUIGI GHIRRI – THE MAP AND THE TERRITORY

Posted on 2019-02-25

This first retrospective of photographs taken outside his native Italy by Luigi Ghirri (1943- 1992) focuses on the 1970s. It covers a decade in which Luigi Ghirri produced a corpus of colour photographs unparalleled in Europe at that time.

Luigi Ghirri, who was a trained surveyor, began taking photographs at weekends in the early 1970s, devising projects and themes as he roamed up and down the streets, the piazzas and the suburbs of Modena. He cast an attentive and affectionate eye on the signs of the outside world, observing, without openly commenting on them, the changes wrought by humans to the landscape and the housing in the Reggio Emilia, his province of birth. It was a barometer for a local vernacular exposed to the advent of new forms of housing, leisure and advertising.

SALLY GALL – HEAVENLY CREATURES

Posted on 2019-02-25

Heavenly Creatures are kites, billowing in the air, as observed at festivals in Italy, Denmark, Washington and New Jersey. She records the skyward movement of cloth and paper flying machines, fragile objects connected to earth by tenuous strings – and like laundry, a universal human occupation. As in Aerial, these images are transformative, a celebration of color and suggestive abstract form. Both Aerial and Heavenly Creatures continue Sally Gall’s lifetime investigation of the sensual properties of the natural world; light, air, wind, and sky. Abstracted by composition, context, and color, these anthropomorphic photographs suggest sea creatures, constellations and other planetary forces, blooming flowers, microscopic amoebas.

Gall states “…I’m drawn to abstract painters that reference a landscape just by a few strokes of paint…” Indeed, the abstract forms against bright and atmospheric sky evoke Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Georgia O’Keefe and Howard Hodgkins, among others. Both Aerial and Heavenly Creatures embody Sally Gall’s search for poetry in the everyday, the miraculous in the ordinary, and as Fischl observes “capturing the elusive distractions of fleeting beauty.”

The Hundreds and Heavy Metal have teamed up to deliver fans a limited collection that will live on timelessly like the legendary magazine itself. The exclusive collaboration will include t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts featuring striking artwork of the heroic Taarna, lone remaining warrior of the Taarakian race and the only one who could defeat the Loc-Nar. The Hundreds branding is fused with iconic Heavy Metal typography, available in an assortment of colorways that compliment the intricate art. Modern reinterpretations of the legendary hero Taarna grace two of the shirts in the collection, masterfully designed by Luis Royo from the cover of Heavy Metal Magazine #284 and Alex Ross’ cover art for issue #1 of Taarna’s comic series.

Alongside the clothing, The Hundreds and Heavy Metal will also be releasing an extremely limited skate deck pulled straight out of 1981, complete with Chris Achilleos’ original Taarna artwork from the cover of Heavy Metal’s September ‘81 issue.
