GARRY FABIAN MILLER – ILLUMINATIONS

Posted on 2019-02-04

Fabian Miller’s calculated exposures, lasting from thirty seconds to twenty hours, recall a painter’s grasp of craftsmanship. Fabian Miller effectively paints with light, mapping out the direction of light through cut-paper shapes and sketching studies for forms before exposure. The final photographs are often the result of multiple printings. In effect, Fabian Miller’s work rekindles the wonder and fascination of the pioneers of early chemical photography, capturing the magical allure of light.

Focusing his aesthetic towards an increasingly profound way to interpret energy within the elements, Fabian Miller’s evolution as a photographer is a beautiful, comprehensive path towards abstraction, resembling a clarity akin to Mondrian’s abstraction of painting. The photographer’s perambulatory process develops imagined visual forms that reflect on the sanctity of life with a contemplative and hopeful nature.

RAPHAELA SIMON – STERNE

Posted on 2019-02-04

Simon’s ladies, fashionably dressed and with golden rings on their fingers, the glass of champagne right at hand, describe a crowd
usually encountered at exhibition openings – a cigarette in the mouth, sunglasses covering the face, purse and costume in matching colours. Simon makes figures out of various fabrics in an elaborate and detailed manner. The hair is accurately composed of pieces of textile, polished nails are applied to the fingertips and visible seams mark distinctive facial features.
For the first time Raphaela Simon presents a selection of these fabric figures together with new paintings. Simon’s canvases are defined by clear and simple compositions. Structures and forms are being constantly repeated, colours such as light blue, white and black carry like a thread through her entire work.

KARL MARTIN HOLZHAUSER – LICHTMALERI

Posted on 2019-02-04

The show will feature Holzhäuser’s vintage “light paintings” (“Lichtmaleri”) from the 1980s and early 1990s, a period in which the artist was a chief practitioner of Concrete Photography.

Holzhäuser’s “paintings with light” align themselves with the tenets of Concrete Photography as nonobjective pictorial worlds, devoid of any intentional reference to figuration or reality. Wielding “the light rake” (“Lichtrakel”), a light-emitting tool of his own fabrication, the artist exposes sensitized chromogenic photographic papers to light bands of varying color and width, building abstractions from a predetermined series of gestures. Holzhäuser works in total darkness without the benefit of seeing what has been exposed until after the picture is developed, making visible the gridded patterns or organic shapes mapped or memorized by the artist in advance.
