ALICE NEEL – ALICE NEEL IN NEW JERSEY AND VERMONT

Posted on 2018-11-26

Alice Neel is considered to be one of the greatest chroniclers of 20th-century America, a story that is brought to life through the magnificent portraits she executed in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side of New York City. From intellectuals to next-door neighbours, and from fellow artists to single mothers,
Neel painted people from all walks of life. Active for over fifty years, her legacy is an oeuvre that is as historically illuminating and socially engaged as it is
autobiographical. Selected by Jeremy Lewison, advisor to the Estate of Alice Neel, this exhibition reveals the way in which she viewed her own intimate world. In contrast to the portraits that Neel painted in New York, most of which are set indoors, the works painted in Spring Lake and Vermont are filled with light, lush vegetation and a sense of openness. Often executed during holidays and weekends, they speak not just of a change of scenery but also of mood: the struggles and vicissitudes of city life give way to an altogether simpler and more rustic existence.

JANET DELANEY – PUBLIC MATTERS, 1982 – 1988

Posted on 2018-11-26

Capturing the spirit of protest and parade, Public Matters brings together photographs made by Janet Delaney in Reagan-era San Francisco. At this turbulent time in the mid eighties, Delaney was living in the primarily Latino neighbourhood of the Mission District. She would spend the weekends photographing public gatherings, from the annual Cinco de Mayo parade, to the Peace, Jobs and Justice marches, which rallied against the U.S. invasion of Nicaragua. If political governance was regressing, the West Coast city was a place where, as Delaney notes, ‘progressive ideas would always be upheld.’ Celebrating multiculturalism and collective struggles for social justice, Public Matters surfaces at a juncture when the message of building bridges is needed now more than ever.

MARY FREY – REAL LIFE DRAMAS

Posted on 2018-11-26

The imagery in Real Life Dramas is culled from a series of the same name, first exhibited at MOMA’s 1987 New Photography 2 show. The original photographs are, like her black and white images, portrayals of ordinary moments constructed for the camera, but with the addition of photographically generated texts in the prints’ white borders, that appropriate the language of popular culture. is culled from a series of the same name, first exhibited at MOMA’s 1987 New Photography 2 show. The original photographs are (like her Carver images), constructed, ordinary moments, but with the addition of photographically generated texts in the prints’ white borders, that appropriate the language of popular culture. For the book, Frey abandoned these strict pairings of text and image and instead incorporated a few phrases throughout, opening up the work to intriguing, new possibilities.

KIMBRA AUDREY X CHANEL

Posted on 2018-11-25

A short film by Kimbra Audrey for the Autumn/Winter issue of EXIT filmed exclusively on super 8 in Iceland

“Can the sunlight put the truth in my veins?
Can the light from your face wash away my sweet pain?
You were made from the soil, I was made from the rain
Can your sunlight put the truth in my veins?

And I’ve been wandering around for so long, I don’t remember from where I came
And I could blame it all on your my dear, but really, who’s to blame?
And I could kiss or I could kill, but really it’s all the same
Underneath the bridge, waiting for the train

There was a room in your tomb for a bride and groom
And I know you’ve been seeing other boys, I just don’t know whom
I learned so many things about you, I just didn’t need to know
But I can’t help myself, I’m sick, I still love you so
I learned so many things about you, I just didn’t need to know
But I can’t help myself I’m sick, I still love you so

It was wrong from the start, I really got torn apart
Straight into my bed, like a hunter for my heart
And don’t pretend that we was friends, we were never friends
And don’t go crying “it was love”, if you could walk away from everything

There was a room in your tomb for a bride and groom
And I know you’ve been fucking other boys, I just don’t know whom
I learned so many things about you, I just didn’t need to know
But I can’t help myself, I’m sick, I still love you so
I learned so many things about you, I just didn’t need to know
But I can’t help myself I’m sick, I still love you so
I learned so many things about you, I just didn’t need to know
But I can’t help myself I’m sick, I still love you so
I learned so many things about you, I just didn’t need to know
But I can’t help myself I’m sick, I still love you so”
