SIGNE PIERCE – FAUX REALITIES

Posted on 2017-06-12

Faux Realities will feature over 30 original photographs showcasing the highly-saturated, hyperreal worlds that Pierce inhabits and creates in her images. Over the past two years, Pierce has cultivated a highly sought-after visual aesthetic and conceptual identity through her lurid use of colour, lighting and subject matter. The semiotic spectrum of American excess and decay is showcased within the vacant strip mall interiors, lush palm trees and omnipresent surveillance cameras that glaze Pierce’s work like saccharine pink frosting on a donut, leaving a subtle aftertaste of dirty money and artificiality.

MURRAY FREDERICKS – SALT: VANITY

Posted on 2017-06-12

The Vanity series is a continuation of Fredericks’ renowned Salt series, previously exhibited at Hamiltons in Salt, 2007, Salt II, 2009 and Recent Work, 2014 – 2015. In this next cycle of the project, Fredericks introduces a mirror into the previously undisturbed landscape.

Australian photographer Murray Fredericks’ long relationship with Lake Eyre, where his most recent series Vanity has been produced, commenced in 2003, and to date consists of twenty journeys to the centre of the lake where he photographs for weeks at a time in the vast and infinite landscape. Fredericks is not interested in documenting the literal forms of the landscape. He views the landscape as medium in itself which, when represented in a photograph, has the potential to convey the emotional quality of his experience and relationship to the lake.

Fredericks’ relationship to this project stems from his initial visit to a salt lake in 2001 where late one night he wandered away from his campsite and stopped for some time. Standing alone in the darkness he became aware that the boundary between his physical body and the environment he stood within seemed to soften and become less defined. Fredericks experienced an unfamiliar, powerful sensation of calm and eventually a release from the ever-present anxieties that seem to be inherent to the human condition. In that moment, Fredericks felt a connection to something that seemed to exist beyond his conscious mind. The memory of that experience stayed with Fredericks and defined his pursuit of landscape imagery.

From acclaimed director Nick Broomfield comes a new film about one of the greatest singers of all time. Whitney Houston was the epitome of superstar, an “American Princess”, the most awarded female artist ever. Even though Whitney had made millions of dollars, had more consecutive number ones than The Beatles, and became recognized as having one of the greatest voices of all time, she still wasn’t free to be herself and died at just 48 years old. Made with largely never-before-seen footage and exclusive live recordings, WHITNEY ‘Can I Be Me’ tells Whitney Houston’s incredible and poignant life story with insights from those closest to her.

CHURCHILL

Posted on 2017-06-12

Tensions mount for the beleaguered British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Brian Cox) in the days leading up to infamous Allied D-Day landings in Normandy, France in June, 1944. Fearful of repeating his deadly mistakes from World War I in the Battle of Gallipoli, exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with his historical destiny, Churchill is reluctant to embark on the large-scale campaign, one that the entire war effort hinges upon. Clashing with his Allied political opponents U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower (John Slattery) and British Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (Julian Wadham), the troubled Churchill receives support and devotion from his wife, the brilliant and unflappable Clementine Churchill (Miranda Richardson). With her strength and shrewdness, “Clemmie” halts Winston’s physical, mental spiritual collapse and inspires him on to greatness.
