A MAN CALLED OVE

Posted on 2017-06-26

An isolated retiree with strict principles and a short fuse, Ove (Rolf Lassgård) is the quintessential angry old man next door. Having entirely given up on life, his days are spent in a constant monotony of enforcing housing association rules and visiting his wife Sonja’s grave.

But when a boisterous young family moves in next door, immediately incurring his wrath, things take an unexpected turn. Pregnant Parvaneh (Bahar Pars) and her lively children are the complete antithesis of what ill-tempered Ove thinks he needs – and yet, from this inauspicious beginning an unlikely friendship blooms and Ove’s past happiness and heartbreaks come to light. Adaptation from Fredrik Beckman’s novel.

IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD

Posted on 2017-06-26

From the director of Mai Mai Miracle and the producers of Millennium Actress & Tokyo Godfathers. The award-winning story of IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD follows a young lady named Suzu Urano, who in 1944 moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. Suzu’s life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during World War II. Her perseverance and courage underpin this heart-warming and inspirational tale of the everyday challenges faced by the Japanese in the midst of a violent, war-torn country. This beautiful yet poignant tale shows that even in the face of adversity and loss, people can come together and rebuild their lives.

SOBREMESA

Posted on 2017-06-24

The hottest day of the year so far saw an invited selection of London’s art crowd getting some respite from the tropical conditions in the private dining room of the Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. The occasion was Havana Club’s first installment of a series of sobremesa dinners – in Cuba, the sobremesa is the name given to the informal period of conversation and discussion that begins as dinner finishes. Fellow guests including Fran Gavin (NTS Radio, AnOther, Dazed), Alex Rayner (The Guardian, Supplement) and Ekow Eshun (Calvert Journal) joined a discussion about Cuban art and design between host Paul Croughton and his special guest, Phaidon’s commissioning editor Michele Robecchi. And, just as in Cuba, the sobremesa was marked by a bottle of the finest rum being placed on the table for guests to savour during the conversation – in this case, a bottle of Havana Club’s Maximo from their Iconica range. Robecchi spoke at length about the healthy state of Cuba’s current art scene which he described as “emancipating” itself from outside critics’ stereotypical ideas of what Cuban art should be, and had particular praise for the Havana Biennale. “The risk with these events, of traveling all the way down there and seeing the same usual suspects you see in Venice or Berlin, is enormous,” he told the guests. “But when you get to Havana you really see the local art represented. And that’s ultimately what makes the biannual interesting – the fact it’s been running for over 30 years is a testament to it. And it’s location means that truly it functions as a bridge between northern and southern America. It’s such an interesting time for art and architecture there.”

Thanks to all at Havana Club for their hospitality. Check listings for details on forthcoming sobremesas with guests talking about Cuban literature, boxing, fashion and travel.

HARRY GRUYAERT – WESTERN AND EASTERN LIGHT

Posted on 2017-06-19

Gruyaert is a Magnum photographer who has travelled extensively over the last 30 years photographing Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and America, often by road from the comfort of his Volkswagen Kombi. He was one of the first European photographers to take advantage of the creative potential of colour photography, following in the footsteps of great American colourists such as William Eggleston and Stephen Shore.

Heavily influenced by the emergence of the Pop Art Movement in New York, Gruyaert has been a pioneer in the use of colour as a means of expression in photography. His filmic, jewel hued scenes have become something of a trademark, at times suspended in a flurry of movement, and at others thick with suspense. His dense compositions weave together a fabric of elements; texture, light, colour and architecture to create tableaux.

The exhibition is made up of an overview of works from many of Gruyaert’s varying series’ spanning from the landscapes of Morocco to the streets of Moscow, and in doing so highlights the artist’s ability to “photograph the subtle chromatic vibrations of Western and Eastern Lig
