SMAGGHE & CROSS – UNTITLED

Posted on 2017-05-22

Vladimir Ivkovic continues to plough his own unique and uncompromising path with this latest release on his Offen imprint. This special 10 inch from the duo of Smagghe & Cross comes soon after their debut LP, also released courtesy of Offen. Both sides contain tracks which feel as if they’ve been plucked straight out of one of Vladimir’s highly revered DJ mixes, managing to transcend time or place and carry with them an air of refined and considered production.

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS

Posted on 2017-05-22

The Hippopotamus is a rollicking adaptation of the best-selling novel by Stephen Fry. It centers on a lapsed poet, failed drama critic, redundant husband and hard-working drunk, Ted Wallace (the mellifluously voiced Roger Allam in a rare starring role). Fired from his newspaper job, Ted leaps at the chance to drown his sorrows at his old friend’s country estate, Swafford Hall. A series of spiritual healings have recently put the household in a tizzy. The purported miracle worker is his hosts’ teenage son, Ted’s godson, David (Tommy Knight). Lord and Lady Logan are set on sharing their boy’s “gift” with the world, blissfully unaware that his “laying on of hands” trick involves, well, an emphasis on “laying.” At odds with a colorful party of fellow guests only too ready to swallow anything they’re told, Ted sets out to prove the miracles are a hoax and save the young man from a lifetime of embarrassment.

UMOJA – 707

Posted on 2017-05-22

Known for his work with Harari and the Beaters before Umoja, “Om” Alec created a singular oeuvre of funk/rock/folk/disco musis uring the course of his decades-long reign as one of the most influential artists in the highly challenging (to put it mildly) apartheid-era music scene.

Out May 19, 2017 on LP/CD/Digital is “707,” perhaps the band’s most successful outing, which was originally released in 1988. Love and vocoder, positivity and synth. This recording rocks short and sweet, with a dollop of electronic post-disco hook-y songwriting. Every song was a top ten hit at the time, and to me this music feels timeless.
