TweetKrink announces WHQ, a book of photographs by Craig Costello produced with the generous support of agnès b. WHQ features portraits of over 50 artists and friends who visited the Krink studio, affectionately referred to as “The WHQ.” It includes a foreword by Stephen Powers. WHQ is a glimpse into a culture of creatives, showcasing their style and personality. Each photograph was made in front of the studio’s door, which became the established set. The door served not only as a static backdrop, but also a colorful, collaborative canvas. Curated by Costello, the door gradually collected the marks left by friends invited to write and draw using Krink markers. The door, now a completed work, will be installed and on view at the agnès b. Galerie Boutique in NYC, April 6-May 28. Accompanying the installation and release is a new limited edition: WHQ (Wall Vinyl), 2017, ink jet on adhesive vinyl, 83 x 40 inches, edition of 20. A 1:1 representation of the door, WHQ (Wall Vinyl) is a unique edition with a trompe l’oeil effect.

In his latest mission to capture stunning aerial views of land, sea, and wildlife, Zack Seckler took to the skies above South Africa for seven days from dawn until dusk in a tiny, single-propeller, light-sport aircraft. His abstract, minimalist photographs offer an extraordinary perspective of some of the planet’s most remote locations. Seckler used the maneuverability of the small plane to his greatest advantage, instructing the pilot to fly precisely to locations which caught his interest.
Describing the experience and the photographs produced: “I liken it to being over a giant canvas and being able to create brushstrokes. . .” He continues: “From elevations between 50 and 500 feet, the landscape hovers on the line between things looking very real and recognizable and being more abstract. That’s what really draws me in—the line between reality and abstraction.” Deliberately avoiding the horizon and often shooting from the plane window at an angle perpendicular to the ground adds to the disorientation of the curious, two-dimensional images. Other completed bodies of work include aerial landscapes of Iceland and Botswana.

The 70 photographs have been held in an American private collection for over 60 years and this April they will finally be brought back to London, where this unique group will go on display for the first time.
Originally purchased in the early 1950s, the works form a complete survey of Beaton’s early photography ranging from portraits of the “Bright Young People” in the 1920s, innovative fashion pictures for Vogue, portraits from Hollywood in the 1930s, to his lesser-known wartime documentary photographs commissioned by the British Ministry of Information.
Portraits included in the exhibition include figures such as Queen Elizabeth (subsequently the Queen Mother), The Duke and Duchess of Windsor on their wedding day, Salvador Dali, Vivien Leigh, Augustus John, Charles de Gaulle, Orson Welles, H G Wells and Aldous Huxley.

Thirty years after the exhibition Hommage à Ferrari, the Fondation Cartier will once again focus its attention on the world of cars with the exhibition Autophoto dedicated to photography’s relationship to the automobile. Since its invention, the automobile has reshaped our landscape, extended our geographic horizons and radically altered our conception of space and time, consequently influencing the approach and practice of photographers. The exhibition Autophoto will show how the car provided photographers with a new subject, new point of view and new way of exploring the world. Organized in series, it will bring together 500 works made by 100 historic and contemporary artists from around the world including Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Lee Friedlander, Rosângela Renno and Yasuhiro Ishimoto. Capturing the geometric design of roadways, the reflections in a rear-view mirror or our special relationship with this object of desire, these photographers invite us to look at the world of the automobile in a new way. The exhibition will also include other projects such as a series of car models that cast a fresh eye on the history of automobile design, created specifically for the show by French artist Alain Bublex. It will be accompanied by a catalogue including over 700 reproductions,
an alternative history of automobile design, essays by scholars working different disciplines and quotes by participating artists.
