VANS FLAME SK8-HI REISSUE

Posted on 2017-04-24

Last seen in the 1990s, the classic Vans “Flame” pack has made an unexpected and welcome return. A true throwback, the 2017 re-release includes two of the most iconic Vans silhouettes: the Sk8-Hi and the Old Skool. In both cases, the kicks sport black canvas construction along with the usual white contrast stitching as a bold flame graphic decorates the quarter panels.

STEPHEN WILKES – ELLIS ISLAND

Posted on 2017-04-24

For five years (1998-2003) New York photographer Stephen Wilkes explored the hospital complex that comprised the south side of Ellis Island. Neglected for almost fifty years, the buildings were in a state of extreme disrepair: lead paint peeled from the ceilings and walls, vines and trees grew through the floorboards, detritus and debris littered the hallways. In rooms long-abandoned, Wilkes captured a spirited new vision of this gateway to freedom. Twelve million people passed through Ellis Island. Approximately one percent were turned away for health reasons. Wilkes’s powerful images of the underbelly of the island–a purgatory between freedom and captivity–ask us to reflect on the defining experiences of millions.

SARAH CHARLESWORTH – NATURAL MAGIC

Posted on 2017-04-24

While familiar imagery can be seen throughout her photographic career, a particular interest in nineteenth century American Spiritualism and photography, and the creation of visual and optical modernism, distinguishes “Natural Magic.” Framed in ovals styled after nineteenth century traveling magic road shows, Charlesworth uses the “magic tricks” of analog medium and large format camera––double exposures, special effect props, and light and scale manipulation––to explore the relationships between the science of photography and the obfuscating effects of magic, playing the conventions of each against each other.

Sarah Charlesworth was a central figure in the development of contemporary photographic practices. From the late 70s until her final series in 2012, Charlesworth responded to the rapidly increasing saturation of the visual field, analyzing the ways photography expresses value and belief systems, and examining the role of the medium within popular culture as it serves to articulate models of sexuality, gender, and politics. Upon reevaluation in today’s socio-political context, this particular series provides poignant commentary on the notion of veracity.
