JEFF KOONS – A RETROSPECTIVE

Posted on 2015-08-24

Jeff Koons: A Retrospective, is an exhibition that looks back at the work of one of the most eminent figures in the art of our time, the unmistakable Jeff Koons. This chronological, coherent retrospective of Koons’s artistic output was organized by New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Centre National d’Art et de culture Georges Pompidou, Paris.

Over the past four decades, Jeff Koons has developed a singular, distinctive, innovative oeuvre, becoming one of contemporary art’s most prominent figures. Critics and audiences alike have been surprised by the unexpected concepts that Koons has presented at different exhibitions throughout his career. At this exhibition’s Spanish debut, the public will be able to enjoy a comprehensive survey of the artist’s work, which speaks to us of self-acceptance, appreciation of the world around us, and the affirmation of being through art.

EMMET GOWIN – PHOTOGRAPHS

Posted on 2015-08-24

As an artist and a teacher, Emmet Gowin (b. 1941) is one of the most important photographers of the last 50 years. His pictures honor the medium’s past while exploring classic themes in a fresh and deeply personal way.

Gowin’s technical expertise serves his poetic purpose. He is interested in the wonder of the everyday, the intimacy of the family, the depth of human history, and the majesty of nature. Through the logic of his creative vision, these varied subjects unite to form a richly original artistic whole.

Gowin first achieved art-world renown in the early 1970s for his family photographs of his wife Edith and her kin, in Danville, Virginia. Inspired by the simplicity of the amateur snapshot, these fresh and spontaneous photographs elevate the details of everyday life to the level of dream and myth. While Edith remained an important subject, Gowin’s interests grew to include the landscape, deep cultural time, and the traces of human activity on the face of the earth.

Over his long and distinguished career, Gowin’s artistic goal has remained the same: to use the camera to explore the mystery and poetic resonance of what is everywhere around us

GERMAINE KRULL (1897-1985)

Posted on 2015-08-24

The exhibition at Jeu de Paume revisits Germaine Krull’s work in a new way, based on collections that have only recently been made available, in order to show the balance between a modernist artistic vision and an innovative role in print media, illustration and documentation. As she herself put it – paradoxically, in the introduction to her Études de nu (1930) –, ‘The true photographer is the witness of each day’s events, a reporter.’

If Krull is one of the most famous women photographers, her work has been little studied in comparison to that of her contemporaries Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy and André Kertész. Nor has she had many exhibitions: in 1967, a first evocation was put on at the Musée du Cinéma in Paris, then came the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, in 1977, the Musée Réattu, Arles, in 1988, and the 1999 retrospective based on the archives placed at the Folkwang Museum, Essen.
