JACK PIERSON – ONTHISISLAND

Posted on 2015-08-10

The new body of work is comprised of small watercolor and graphite works on paper, paintings and driftwood assemblages, made while in a self-imposed retreat on the island of North Captiva, on Florida’s gulf coast, from December to March, of the past year. Much like the artist’s well known work and installations of the last twenty-five years, these pieces are component in nature, existing as discrete pieces or as grids and rows, documenting a walkabout at once both cosmic and interior.

For the past several years in an effort to “get back to the hand” Pierson has been practicing “automatic drawing” a technique of the Surrealists made famous by André Masson. It was also an occultist pastime of the milieu surrounding Alla Nazimova, the silent film director and star of 1920s Hollywood. Pierson first exhibited his drawings around this subject in 2012 in Belgium as part of an exhibition entitled Jesus and Nazimova.

C418 MINECRAFT VOLUME ALPHA

Posted on 2015-08-10

Minecraft Volume Alpha, the first installment of a two-part OST, is the work of German composer and musician Daniel Rosenfeld. Using C418 as his moniker, Rosenfeld crafted the sweeping soundtrack and vibrant sound design which helped breathe life into Minecraft’s voxel-based universe. Fans and critics were universally enamored with his beatless, nuanced electronic pieces upon release. Popular gaming site Kotaku named it among The Best Game Music of 2011, calling the music “remarkably soothing,” and The Guardian has compared Rosenfeld’s delicate piano and sparse ambient motifs to legendary artists Erik Satie and Brian Eno. In an interview feature with C418, Polygon distilled Volume Alpha to its essence: “It’s not bound by the retro aesthetic of Minecraft’s graphics. It transcends them. The album is an attempt to uplift the combined game/music experience into the sublime.”

For the soundtrack’s physical release, Ghostly has designed standard black vinyl and digipak CD packages around colorful artwork from the digital version. There’s also a limited-edition LP that brings some extra magic to the table. Record collectors and Minecraft completists take note: Only 1,000 copies of Volume Alpha will be pressed on transparent green vinyl, arriving complete with a lenticular-printed jacket which gives new depth and movement to the cover’s 3D-rendered image.

DELOREAN – CRYSTAL

Posted on 2015-08-10

Barcelona-based Delorean present the video for ‘Crystal’, their first new release since 2013’s Apar. The video was directed, produced and animated by Joan Guasch, who has previously helmed videos for Sau Poler, Amon Tobin and Downliners Sekt. Gausch commented: “Created from two 3D scanned characters, ‘Crystal’ is a psychedelic trip through different stages in a relationship. The photogrammetry technique has been used to create the models and textures, using more than 2500 still pictures.” ‘Crystal’ is out now (digital only) via the band’s own label PHLEX ahead of a new album which is planned for release in early 2016.

TOM FORD – NATALIA HANDBAG COLLECTION

Posted on 2015-08-03

Tom Ford introduces two new versions of his iconic Natalia bag, translating its bold and daring evening look into styles to be worn by day. They feature the instantly recognizable Natalia signature, the supersized turn lock hardware on the bag’s front, scaled down for daytime to signal a slightly more casual feel. The sleek, 60s feel of the original Natalia design persists for daytime with black and white materials and contrasting white leather against black patent. The centerpiece of this micro-collection is the classic daytime Natalia bag, offered in three sizes: medium, large and “east-west”, a horizontal clutch. In addition to the resized turn lock hardware, a spectrum of materials is available. Denim takes a different tone from one bag to another, due to the inherent fluctuation of the fabric’s wash; suede and printed patent are also for the body of the bag. The hardware is offered in two finishes: shining gunmetal or the signature TOM FORD gold.

The collection will be available online and in stores beginning September 1st.
