#DIESEL FW14 SHOW

Posted on 2014-04-09

The show and the collection are built upon three of the timeless ‘Diesel Icons’: Leather-Rock ‘n’ Roll, Denim and Military-Utility. These three pillars are intrinsic to Diesel and are a part of the foundations of the brand today. They also structure the proceedings of the event, moving from the multiplicity of black and red leather looks of the first section, to the new innovations and experiments in denim of the second, to the military meets street-style of the third section. Each encompasses a view of the past and a route to the future for Diesel. Capturing the youthful spirit of the brand and its distinct take of ‘Italiano-Americana’, as well as a nod to late nineties London nightlife, it is the global language of ‘alternative style’ that is explored in the show, both inspired by and inspiring for Diesel.

Each section is interspersed with a film by Formichetti’s long-time collaborator, the photographer and digital pioneer Nick Knight, and features professional dancers, including the choreographer and former Royal Ballet principal Ivan Putrov. There is a special live performance by another, newer Formichetti collaborator, Brooke Candy. Presenting her latest single Opulence, Miss Candy takes to the stage before the show finale.

“This collection is a foundational collection. We are re-looking at our iconic pieces and the themes and spirit of Diesel; looking at what we essentially are and what we stand for, and then looking at where we are going to…”

Nicola Formichetti, Artistic Director of Diesel

Inspired by true events, THE QUIET ONES tells the story of an unorthodox professor (Harris) who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist. Based on the theory that paranormal activity is caused by human negative energy, the rogue scientists perform a series of tests on a young patient, pushing her to the edge of sanity. As frightening occurrences begin to take place with shocking and gruesome consequences, the group quickly realizes they have triggered a force more terrifying and evil than they ever could have imagined.

HITO STEYERL

Posted on 2014-04-07

Berlin-based artist and writer Hito Steyerl is one of the most critically acclaimed artists working in the field of video today. Steyerl’s work focuses on contemporary issues such as feminism and militarisation, as well as the mass proliferation and dissemination of images and knowledge brought on by digital technologies.

This exhibition offers a selected survey of Steyerl’s work. Presented here are five videos, each installed in a distinct manner. The first film encountered is titled Liquidity Inc. (2014). This new work looks at a financial advisor called Jacob Wood who lost his job during the last financial crisis, and who then embarked on a career in mixed martial arts. How Not to Be Seen: A Fucking Didactic Educational .MOV File (2013) mocks an instructional film on the idea of becoming invisible in the digital world. Finally, her video Guards (2012) deals with museum officers with a background as law enforcement officers or military personnel. Two recorded lecture performances – I Dreamed a Dream and Is the Museum a Battlefield? – filmed live in 2013 at the 13th Istanbul Biennial and Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin respectively are presented here in the exhibition.

Exhibition runs through to April 27th, 2014
