THE DOUBLE

Posted on 2014-03-31

Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite – confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.
Directed by Richard Ayoade and stars Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. The film is based on the novella The Double by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

NEW BALANCE – CITY OF GOLD 574

Posted on 2014-03-31

South African sneaker boutique, Shelflife, and local designer, Dr.Zulu have teamed up with international sneaker brand New Balance for a collaborative project: the New Balance x Shelflife x Dr.Z “City of Gold” 574.
The graphics also make reference to the formidable “Parktown Prawn” king cricket. Specific to the Johannesburg region, the Parktown Prawn has grown into a cultural icon due to its aggressive nature and the urban legend of it’s indestructibility .

Two additional design elements have been worked into the sneaker; with the yellow and grey colourway reflecting the colours of the local train system, as well as a stylized diamond symbol that mimics the graphics of traditional African tribal artworks.
Boasting a collection of premium extras, the “City of Gold” 574 package comes with two interchangeable velcro options for the ‘N’ logo, a spare pair of black laces, a canvas carry bag and a rubber prawn keying.

PHIL BERGERSON – AMERICAN ARTIFACTS

Posted on 2014-03-31

Since 1995, Canadian photographer Phil Bergerson has made numerous extended road-trips throughout the United States, criss-crossing the continent in search of the scattered remnants of the ‘American Dream’.

American Artifacts presents an extract from this sweeping topographical survey. Bergerson’s photographs unearth liminal spaces inscribed with the residue of human behaviour and surplus cultural production: places where detritus, disappointments and desires collide in shop window displays, hand-painted mural and crudely made signs. Operating as both documentary photographer and cultural commentator, Bergerson draws on the American social landscape tradition to assemble a complex and poetic photographic portrait of a nation in transition.

The exhibition coincides with the publication of American Artifacts by Black Dog Publishing, a unique photographic book featuring seven suites of tightly sequenced images bracketed by the writings of Margaret Atwood and Nathan Lyons.

Opposite – Birmingham, Alabama, 2006

Exhibition runs through to May 10th, 2014
