JAMIE TURRELL – RECENT WORKS

Posted on 2014-01-27

For over three decades, Turrell has used light and indeterminate space — not objects, nor images — to extend and enhance perception. Turrell’s inspiration draws from astronomy, physics, architecture and theology.

Turrell’s first solo exhibition at Pace London features two never-before-seen works from the Wide Glass series staged in site-designed chambers on the ground floor of the gallery. Works from this series were recently included in the LACMA’s exhibition. Each Wide Glass work is unique and features an aperture with a frosted and curved glass surface animated by an array of sophisticated LED lights. With these new works, Turrell continues his exploration of technological possibilities combined with sensory practices, and invites the viewer to a meditative experience.

“I am really interested in the qualities of one space sensing another. It is like looking at someone looking. Objectivity is gained by being once removed. As you plumb a space with vision, it is possible to ‘see yourself see’. This seeing, this plumbing, imbues space with consciousness.” James Turrell.

Exhibition runs through to April 5th, 2014

GEORGE CONDO – INK DRAWINGS

Posted on 2014-01-20

Since the beginning of his artistic career, drawing and works on paper have formed an important part of George Condo’s working practice. Featuring monumental works on paper this exceptional series, realised over a six-month period, marks an exciting new area of focus for Condo.

“My intention with this body of work was to explore the extreme possibilities of ink on paper. I used the medium to create transparent layers of colors. I thought of Rothko at times and his overlapping veils of transcendental space. I placed the figure into this kind of space and used lines to define their ambiguous presence in the void.”

In Standing Bather, 2013 the female nude positioned centre of the composition embodies an angelic purity against the tempestuous background of dark browns and black. Through his elongation of the female form to grand dimensions and his application of gesso onto the paper, Condo imbues the figure with a sculptural quality and magnifies her figurative presence. Here as in other works in the series, the wash of colour dripping down the surface of the paper underscores the gestural freedom and spontaneity of drawing which Condo has embraced in this new body of work.

BLOODY ENGLISH

Posted on 2014-01-20

Bloody English, is a group exhibition curated by Ariella Wolens. This exhibition introduces the work of eight contemporary artists based in London: Charlie Billingham, Adham Faramawy, Emma Hart, Celia Hempton, Patrick Hough, Oliver Osborne, Prem Sahib, and Jesse Wine. Each with his or her own distinct sensibility, these artists have been brought together in this exhibition to determine whether nationality can be read through images, and what may be distinct about English artwork. From the heritage of Gainsborough and Turner, to the celebrity of the Young British Artists of the ‘90s, these young artists are responding to their environment whilst delineating their position within a globalized art world, forming their identity in relation to their past and transnational present.

The title of this exhibition invokes the British penchant for irony, with a black humor that subverts Victorian decorum. In focusing on the English character, Bloody English highlights the contradictions between the stereotypical image of propriety and the English sense of humor that thrives on painful awkwardness. In Emma Hart’s video Dice (2009), the artist plays a game of chance with the sea. The absurdity builds with the repetition of the action, and the surmounting tension, in this deadpan performance with nature.

Exhibition runs through to February 15th, 2014
