New York electronic pop act Xeno & Oaklander have shared a video for their recent single “Sheen”. Directed by Joshua Zucker-Pluda, it finds a woman in an elegant dress alone in a deserted lab as sublime white light pours in. SLATER BRADLEY – SHE WAS MY LA JETEE

Posted on 2013-08-12

Slater Bradley returns to Madrid to represent his latest work she was my la jeteé, a personal remake of the cult film La Jeteé (1962) by his idol Chris Marker, one of the best known experimental filmmakers of the 20th century. In this work – filmed with Super 8 and HD, Bradley creates an idealised potrait of an unachievable woman. In addition, the exhibiton contains a series of photographs that represent the same archetypical pattern of an ideal woman as in La Jeteé.

JOAO MARIA GUSMEO & PEDRO PAIVA

Posted on 2013-08-12

Gusmão and Paiva explore references of existentialism in the philosophical tradition, metaphysical literature, as well as Alfred Jarry’s proto-surrealism. The exhibition takes its title from a philosophical question proposed by William Molyneux to John Locke about the recovery of sight. If a man born blind can feel the differences between shapes such as spheres and cubes, could he similarly distinguish those objects by sight if given the ability to see? This problem is mentioned by Locke in his An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, regarding the basis of knowledge and the mechanisms of thought in the human mind.

In the first room of the exhibition, eight bronze sculptures propose alegories on the nature of images, optical illusions and physical phenomena. In Coisas Redondas [Round Things], a series of circular objects are connected in such a way that they look square from certain angles. Bola de tênis [Tennis Ball] reproduces the movement of a little ball bouncing on a pedestal. Cavaleiro [Horseman] is a distorted image that creates an illusion of tridimensionality from a determined point of view. By alluding with humor to the language of science, these objects reveal the narrative nature of science and philosophy in their attempts to understand the world.

The second room of the exhibition has been transformed into a large projection room with five short 16mm films. The sequences are shown in loop on a large screen. Three suns setting among stones, a blind man devouring a papaya, and geometricized fruits whirling in the air as though they were a planetary system. The noise of the projector – the films have no sound – is a permanent reminder of the materiality of the images.

Exhibition runs through to September 14th, 2013

THE READER – MIXED DEALINGS

Posted on 2013-08-12

Traveling repeatedly throughout the US, The Reader has quite literally made a name for himself that is there for all to see. Leaving a mass of public adornments for over a decade, Reader has maintained an illusiveness and anonymous presence in a desolate grey zone between so called “street art” and graffiti. In recent years Reader carried his oft-cryptic messages of literacy and inquiry into the gallery at the encouragement of his longtime friend Elias Hansen (Lawrimore Project, Seattle 2011).

A scavenger and “relocator” of the discarded and overlooked, Reader transforms untraceable detritus into the foundations of mixed media screen prints and sculptures. His workspace resembles a “byproduct chop-shop” more than it does a traditional artist’s studio.

Characteristic of his work is the striking and recurrent use of text. Reader revives now nearly obsolete newspaper boxes and presents them in a context suggestive of ulterior purposes. The boxes themselves, isolated from their natural environment, appear to be salvaged by any available means. Scorched and mutilated they are newly employed by a rival enterprise. Metal sheets accented with both vibrant and weathered hues are welded together in a patchwork reminiscent of color field painting.

Both unavoidable and hidden amongst the layers, Reader’s works are dealt through a range of materials. Some give clues to process and approach, others leave open a wide scope of interpretation, and all represent real work. That is the kind that is done outdoors and leaves one dirty. As the show title alludes to, Mixed Dealings is the result of a multifaceted discipline and uncertain means. Reader may not be hacking at establishment, as much as he is attempting to forge one anew.
