SAINT ETIENNE – WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, MERVYN DAY?

Posted on 2012-10-15

Heavenly Films are to release a DVD release for ‘What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day?’, Paul Kelly and Saint Etienne’s classic depiction of London’s lower Lea Valley before it was redeveloped to become the Olympic Park.

After their 2003 feature debut ‘Finisterre’ (co-directed by Kieran Evans) Paul and the band were commissioned by the Barbican in 2005 to direct a creative documentary with a live soundtrack. The film beautifully captures the east London site – its winding overgrown canals, and derelict warehouses – before the developers and bulldozers moved in, before the birthplace of plastic and petrol was changed forever.

MATT JOHNSON

Posted on 2012-10-08

Working with traditional media including bronze, stone, wood, steel and aluminum, Johnson’s work utilizes materials that are synonymous with strength, belying the delicate, sensuous, and sometimes weightless appearance of the sculptures themselves. Objects seem to be poised just so, however fragile in their disposition. The work focuses on the physical point at which an object, when standing on its own, becomes a sculpture. Notions of classicism abound, from bronze drapery, to polished marble as well as a kinship to wabi-sabi and mono no aware. The spirits inhabiting or occupying these objects are pushed to the forefront, often bringing into question exactly what the viewer is looking at.
