BAT FOR LASHES – DANIEL

Posted on 2009-03-30

Daniel’, the new single from Bat For Lashes was directed in Sweden by Johan Renck, he has previously directed videos for Madonna, Kylie, The Knife and New Order. Typically, his videos are dramatic stories filmed with a crisp eye and sharply edited. They are most distinctive, though, for their melancholic blue-green tint and strongly-lit chiaroscuro. Currently Renck is in pre-production for his first feature. Titled Downloading Nancy, it is a very dark story of a woman about to have herself killed by a man she meets on the Internet, but has doubts when she finds herself attracted to him. It stars Holly Hunter, William Hurt and Stellan Skarsgård.

GUYANA : RUMBLING IN THE JUNGLE

Posted on 2009-03-30

Here’s something to marvel at. In the heart of Guyana’s jungle, on the winding Potaro River (a short plane hop from Georgetown) you’ll find one of the world’s natural wonders: the mighty Kaieteur falls.
Flowing over sandstone tableland into a deep gorge, the water drops a massive 822 feet, or five times the height of Niagara falls, making it one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world.

It’s force not only comes from its height but also its volume, as the water flows over the lip at 663 cubic meters per second (that’s a lot). Historically, the waterfall is named after a Patamona tribe chief who canoed over the falls to encourage spirits to save his tribe from savage enemies. Head here for spectacular and rare wildlife. Guyana’s elusive national symbol, the Cock-of-the-rock, nestles close by and the tiny Golden frog also lives in the area. Hundreds of unusual birds nest behind the rock shelf, sheltered from the curtain of water. Yet another impressive sight in an intriguing, undiscovered country. Intrigued? Black Tomato has a trip which incorporates Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname.

CHAIN-L

On our travels Stateside we kept seeing this rather interesting looking bottle on the shelves of all of our favourite bike shops. We bought some, tried it ourselves, loved it and had to share it with you. So we tracked down Francis, the name behind the company and he told us he began developing Chain-L No.5 in 2006 to satisfy what he believes are the three most important requirements of a chain lubricant: Lubrication, Lubrication and Lubrication.

The exhibition, organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery, is presented in an environment designed by cutting-edge architectural practice Atelier Bow-Wow, featuring life-size blowups of popular figures from the worlds of anime and manga within an intriguing sequence of spaces that evoke Tokyo’s clamorous cityscape.
